Next, we rake through the entire 30-foot by 15-foot sandbox by hand. Step 3: Sanitize Tools, Walls, and High-Touch Areas

The sand itself is sanitized with a simple water and vinegar solution. Vinegar is a natural sanitizer that helps reduce microbes while staying gentle, with no harsh chemical residue left behind for little hands to find. It is the kind of solution many parents already trust in their own kitchens.

The toys and tools are cleaned with a child-safe, CDC-approved hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen, making it a powerful yet kid-friendly choice for the trucks, scoops, and diggers that get the most hand-to-mouth contact. To be precise and honest: it is the toy disinfectant that carries the CDC-approved designation, not the sand. The sand is simply the soft, silica-free type that health experts recommend.

Is the Sand Itself Safe? Silica-Free and Allergen-Friendly

Cleaning is only half the story. The other half is the sand we chose in the first place. Not all play sand is created equal, and the difference matters more than most parents realize.

We use Baha Play Sand, an oolitic aragonite sand sustainably harvested from The Bahamas and supplied by Calcean Minerals & Materials.
